EXPLORE THE RICH CULTURE OF OUR NATIVE AMERICAN ANCESTORS THROUGH HISTORY FORT LAUDERDALE’S “SEMINOLE MODERN: PHOTOGRAPHS AND ARTIFACTS FROM A CHANGING FLORIDA”
Native American Heritage Month exhibit runs November 1 – 30
In honor of Native American Heritage Month, History Fort Lauderdale will present “Seminole Modern: Photographs and Artifacts from a Changing Florida,” a visual narrative spanning two decades of Tribal contributions to our region, from November 1 – 30, 2025, at the New River Inn History Museum.
“To appreciate the present, we must understand our shared past. History Fort Lauderdale is deeply grateful for the cultural contributions and support of the Seminole Tribe of Florida and it is an honor to present this notable exhibit honoring their legacy,” said Patricia Zeiler, executive director of History Fort Lauderdale. “This year’s Native American Heritage Month exhibit visually illustrates how our indigenous ancestors have flourished and impacted Florida’s ecological, economic, and cultural landscape during the mid-century period.”
The free-to-view exhibit will feature black and white, color and colorized photos plus artwork and artifacts from History Fort Lauderdale’s collection spanning the 1950s – 1960s. The exhibit depicts Seminole lifestyle and industry – including both goods made for Tribe members and tourists. Also on display will be samples of traditional, vibrant patchwork fabrics and native dresses.
“Seminole Modern: Photographs and Artifacts from a Changing Florida,” exhibit is sponsored by the following funds at the Community Foundation of Broward: Jan and Ed Crocker Unrestricted Fund, Leo M. and Alice J. Rutten Fund and The Frederick A. DeLuca Foundation Broward Community Fund. Additional funding is provided, in part, by Broward County Board of County Commissioners as recommended by the Broward County Cultural Council and Visit Lauderdale.
