Mexican Flag bell OctA copper alloy bell was placed on display for a special three week
viewing on October 7th. The Bell was bequeathed to Fort Lauderdale Historical Society by Harriette Hawkins Adams in 1971. Bells or tinklers such as this
were produced during the Postclassic Mesoamerican period from
1200-1521 CE.

These items were traded for use in daily, secular, ceremonial and
combat contexts across a diverse array of distinct socio linguistic
communities throughout the region.

This tzilinilli originated in the Huastec region as a specialized item
that may have traveled widely in exchange for products, materials
and services between communities throughout Mesoamerica.

As an expression of solidarity with the values of culture, heritage
and education, on the 70th anniversary of the signing of the United
Nations Declaration of Human Rights (Article 27, Right to Culture)
and the 100th anniversary of the end of WWI, Fort Lauderdale His-
torical Society will present The Bell for repatriation to its place of
origin, in care of the People of Mexico via the Consul General of
Mexico in Miami, Horacio Saavedra, PhD.
